***THERE IS AN UPDATED VERSION OF THIS RESTORATION. It can be found here: https://archive.org/details/song-of-the-south-1946-homervision-restored-2024-v-30-4-k-cc
----------------
For more than six months I have spent hundreds of hours restoring a well-worn print of Walt Disney’s Song of the South to be as close to the film makers’ intent as possible.
Even though I had no access to the original negatives or other studio elements I became aware of some generally-circulating but imperfect assets that appeared to offer enough information to possibly eke out a presentable version of the film. (These resulted apparently from the film being public domain in both Japan and Spain.)
So I engaged in an intense restoration project largely because I wanted to finally see and enjoy one of my favorite films as it was intended.
And I am excited to announce that the result of the effort is a version of Song of the South that is more pristine than any version even Walt himself ever witnessed.
That may sound like hyperbole but it’s true.
Here are some of the highlights of this restoration:
1. Full High Definition video
2. Audio noise reduction and repair
3. Shot-by-shot Color Correction
4. Flicker removal
5. Blemish repairs
6. Dirt and Scratch removal
7. RGB record realignment
8. Image Sharpening using both AI and standard algorithms.
9. More visible picture area (less cropping)
10. Stereo-enhanced audio
11. Image stabilization
12. Grain reduction
13. Embedded closed captions in English
Since the film has been mistreated and misunderstood since before it was even completed in 1946, I am offering up the restoration of this beautiful film free to all as a public service and as a tribute to Walt’s legacy.

Subject: Awesome, great job.
Here's another video, with less color saturation than this one:

Large and smaller files included.
Thanks for the constructive reviews as well.
Credit where credit's due.
Subject: Great restoration better than Disney Plus version
Subject: Thank you.
1: The length, depth and time you spent is incredible.
2: Frame by frame restoration is an obviously labour of Love
3: This detail is clear to the eyes and ears.
4: Naysayers will always exist because this is art and as such is
subjective. Everyone wants it done their way! Rather than see
the Love you put in, always complain, nitpicking is easier than
acceptance.
I love your restoration. I will treasure it. Critics think what you wish. I never read criticism about one of my performances. I gave my Love to the music and that's all I care.
Again, thanks for your work, your art. It shows.

Subject: Thanks, but no thanks
That said, I can't quite recommend this. On the one hand, its beautifully cleaned up as far as having the dirt and debris removed, and stabilization. Coloring is quite good too. On the other hand, the grain has been completely removed here, giving an artificially clean look that is extremely unnatural, and the sharpening from what looks like AI upscaling is a bit too much and adds more to the very digital look. Sorry, but these things, especally DNR'ing the film grain is a "hell no", especially for film purists. It may look pleasant to the eye if you've never seen what it looks like elsewhere, but a comparison of this with the unaltered 1080p 35mm print scan which you sourced from originally proves these faults. Unless you were to revise this restoration with less artificial sharpening and restoring the film grain to the picture, I'd have to declare the unaltered 35mm scan the winner here, it may be a little rough with the dirt and scratches and the lack of fine tuned color grading, but at least its not distractedly waxy and artificial looking.
Subject: Very big
Subject: Very nice HD remaster.
Subject: Best Restoration To Date!
Subject: Great Restoration
Same is true for the scene by the lake, actually. For some reason, you decided there should be no "dead" trees and grass, turning the green saturation way, way too high. Apparently, you don't know what the film should look like, and just restored it to what you THINK it should look like. Or rather...what you wanted it to look like.
That said, this is the "cleanest" version available by far. If you like a smooth image packed with over-exposed colors, this is the best way to watch it.
Subject: CAN I JUST LIVE IN A WORD WHERE THE WORD W**E NEVER EXISTED?!?!?!?!?!
(hint: starts with a w)
Subject: Amazing!! SotS The Way Disney Intended It To Be Seen
THANK YOU!!
Subject: Best copy I've seen of this movie
My small quibbles with it are the size of the subtitles and maybe the audio level is a bit high. Viewing the movie with VLC and on my tv the subtitles almost filled the screen. I fixed the subtitle size with Subtitle Edit (changed the font size to 15) but the sound level is manageable with volume control.
Overall, greatness. Thanks again.
Subject: Amazing!!
Thank you for all your time you have spent on this, the movie deserves this!
Ps. Splash mountain closing hurts so much, anyone who has been on it will feel it, I feel we owe it to keep this movie alive!
Subject: Excellent cleanup/restore of SOTS
Thank you for your hard work, it is excellent!
